Major Projects
- Rhetorical analysis—After a series of readings about rhetoric and an introduction to the creation and spread of information online, you will complete a rhetorical analysis of a post/thread/article/story/meme.
- Going Upstream project—After identifying a story shared online (can be the story you analyzed in the first project), you will research the validity of that source by using several different fact checking techniques.
- Whole Story project—After fact checking a piece of information, you will redevelop that story in order to more accurately and more thoroughly represent the facts that you uncovered.
- Remediation project—Finally, you will redevelop your Whole Story project for a specific purpose and audience, choosing a medium and genre that best fits your rhetorical situation.
Short-Form and Small-Stakes Assignments
Over the course of completing these projects, you will also complete a series of short-form assignments. These assignments are labeled as follows in the course syllabus:
- Blog: Short posts relevant to assigned readings. These are designed to help you engage with major concepts in the course.]
- Plan: Short posts relevant to one of your major projects. These posts are designed to help you plan projects. These posts are involve giving and receiving feedback on your writing in-process.
- Share: Short posts that will ask you to provide textual examples or experiences. These posts are meant to help you see how concepts work in real-world examples.
- Comment: Short pieces of writing that emphasize, question, or explain portions of assigned readings.
- Review: Feedback that you will give peers on their drafts in-process. The feedback you will off will be prompted.
To engage the material in these ways, you’ll need to write at least 100 words: about 4-5 sentences. If your post doesn’t meet the minimum criteria for length or engage with the material as outlined above, I will not accept it.
